Arts freedom

The following text is from Arts Freedom Australia:

“It will come as a surprise to most Australians to learn that artists and photographers both profe ssional and amateur working in this country are forced to work under some of the most restrictive and draconian laws of any country in the world.

Our national icons such as Uluru, the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, our beaches such as Bondi and even events such as the Melbourne Cup are covered by laws which restrict artists and photographers painting or taking pictures of these Australian icons or events.

The net result of these laws limit and in some instances deny our local artists the freedom to express their artistic talents in a manner that may make their work distinctly Australian. If the current trends continue the day will soon come where it will be impossible for the creative talents of this nation to employ any of our national symbols or icons in their creative works without facing piles of red-tape and huge licence fees. Federal, state and local governments are enacting legislation that is destroying the creative aims of a rising generation of young aspiring artists and photographers. For them Australia becomes a land of forbidden horizions.

The hard reality is that such laws cannot be enforced in countries outside of Australia. This means that foreign based photographers and artists working outside of Australia have the freedom to use our national images and icons without restriction, leaving our local artists to work at an impossible disadvantage. While perhaps not the intention of our legislators, for a whole generation of Australian artists their homeland is rapidly becoming A FORBIDDEN AUSTRALIA”

This rally has already passed, but it doesn’t mean the cause cannot still be supported!
